Condensed tannins appear to prevent bloat by acting as protein precipitants, preventing the formation of foams. The objective of this study was to determine the genetic basis for the production of condensed tannins in the forage of birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus L.). Results from controlled crosses of high and low tannin plants showed that tannins in birdsfoot trefoil were controlled by a single dominant gene. The F2 and backcross generations gave disomic ratios, consistent with an allotetraploid interpretation. The gene symbol T is proposed for the gene for tannin control in birdsfoot trefoil.
