A method for identifying inbred lines containing dominant alleles affecting a quantitative trait, which are not already present in an elite single cross, was developed. If the elite single cross is designated P1 x P2 and the lines to be tested Pw, the expression µG = [(P1 x Pw) + (P2 x Pw) – P1 – P2 – Pw – (P1 x P2)]/4 is an estimate of the relative number of loci in Pw which contain favorable alleles not present in P1 or P2. Results from applying the method to a set of corn (Zea mays L.) grain yield data suggest the method may be useful in applied breeding programs.
