To obtain information on the type of gene action and number of genes for resistance to Puccinia polysora Underw. in a number of corn (Zea mays L.) populations, we evaluated F2 progenies from crosses between homozygous resistant selections and a common susceptible tester. In other studies with resistant selections, we conducted allele tests to determine if genes for resistance were at the Rpp9 locus. Analysis of our data indicated that either a one or two gene model would explain the F2 ratios obtained. The type of gene action involved included complete, partial, or no dominance. All five selections evaluated were found to have a gene for resistance at, or very closely linked with, the Rpp9 locus.
