Photosynthesis is a primary trait to be improved in a selection program designed to improve yield potential of maize (Zea mays L.). Previous studies have suggested that selection for high CO2 exchange rate (CER) among inbred parents would be effective. We conducted experiments to evaluate the effectiveness of selection for high CER among inbred lines of maize. Actual advance for one cycle of selection among inbred lines was 2.5 (4.7%) and 2.3 (5.7%) mg CO2 dm–2 hour–1 during vegetative growth and during mid-grain filling, respectively. Realized heritabilities for CER were 0.33 and 0.26 for vegetative and grain-filling growth stages.
