Porometer Cup to Measure Leaf Resistance of Pineapple1

D. P. Bartholomew and S. B. Kadzimin2

The lack of information on the response time and calibration characteristics of the available porometer leaf cups at high diffusive resistances caused us to design and construct a teflon porometer leaf cup suitable for measurement f the very high epidermal diffusive resistances (re) encountered with pineapple [Ananas comosus (L.) Merr.] The cup was calibrated to diffusive resistances near 200 sec cm–1 and calibration was linear throughout the range. Measurements on pineapple confirmed that this species has high midday re with values for field grown plants estimated to exceed 400 sec cm–1 on a day with full sun. Minimum resistances of 5 to 10 sec cm–1 were reached at about 1800 hours and early morning values were comparable until 2 to 3 hours after sunrise. The data suggest that the water economy of the pineapple plant is enhanced by increased diffusive resistance at higher levels of radiation and temperature.

Key Words: Diffusion resistance porometer • Leaf diffusion resistance • Stomatal resistance • Ananas comosus (L.) Merr.
