The allelic relationships among three uzu or semibrachytic mutant genes (uz, uz2, uz3) were studied. The coleoptile length and projection on the coleoptile were used as the representative traits of the uzu gene (uz). F1 and F2 data of five crosses showed that the three uzu-type mutants are controlled by the same gene (uz), or at least they are allelic to each other. The previous conclusion that there were three different uzu genes (uz, uz2, and uz3) could be explained as follows: the character plant height used by the previous workers was not only affected by the uzu gene but also by pleiotropic effects of L vs. 1 for spike density and probably other modifier(s) as suggested by Takahashi (1951. Ber Ohara Inst. Landwirtech. Forsch. 9:383–398).
