Chromosome Homology of Avena magna Murphy and Terrell and the Hexaploid Species A. sativa L. and A. byzantina C. Koch1

K. Sadanaga2

Homology of Avena magna M. and T. and the hexaploid species A. sativa L. and A. byzantina C. Koch. chromosomes was determined by the use of telosomes of the hexaploid species. F1 hybrids with 34 chromosomes + 1 telosome were produced from crosses between A. magna used as the male parent and nine telosomic lines of A. sativa and one of A. byzantina. Microsporocytes of each F1 hybrid were analyzed for the presence of a heteromorphic bivalent involving the telosome. Heteromorphic bivalents observed in four hybrids from the telosomic lines indicated that four chromosomes of A. magna are homologous with those four telosomes of the hexaploid species. Two of the telosomes involved in the hetermorphic bivalents are included in the As genome of the standard karyotype of hexaploid oats.

Key Words: Heteromorphic bivalent • Interspecific hybrid • Telosomes
